ArcGIS 1: Introduction to GIS

It takes 3 days (24hours)

This course introduces GIS concepts and ArcGIS tools used to visualize real-world features, discover patterns, obtain information, and communicate that information to others. Using the ArcGIS platform, you will create GIS maps, explore the data behind the maps, and analyze maps and data as you master fundamental concepts that underlie GIS technology.

This is what you’ll learn!

  • Quickly create and share a GIS map
  • Find and organize geographic data and other content for a mapping project
  • Accurately display features on a GIS map and access information about them
  • Perform spatial analysis to answer questions and create new information
  • Share GIS maps and analysis results so they are easily accessible to desktop, web, and mobile device users
GDi will provide the following software

  • ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop or ArcGIS 10.3 for Desktop (Basic, Standard, or Advanced)
  • ArcGIS Online Organizational Account
  • ArcGIS Online

Fundamentals of ArcGIS Online / Portal for ArcGIS

It takes 1 day (8 hours)

Your organization’s ArcGIS Online site is a source for GIS data, web maps, and other content that can enhance and add value to your projects. In this workshop, the instructor shows how to discover content available on an ArcGIS Online organizational site, determine if the content is suitable for your needs, and interact with the content using web maps and Esri Maps for Office.

In this workshop, the instructor discusses the types of content you can publish to ArcGIS Online and shows how to author GIS resources to support their planned use. You will also see how including GIS resources in published web maps and web applications extends their value throughout the organization and even to the general public. Tips to help you plan your publishing strategy are given throughout.

This workshop is intended to introduce you to the types of content your organization may distribute through its ArcGIS Online site. You will see how this content helps you infuse your projects with geographic context, additional business intelligence, and visual impact.

This is what you’ll learn!

  • Discover content on ArcGIS Online and assess whether it meets your project needs
  • Add content to a web map, modify the map display, and create filters to focus on features of interest
  • Create a map inside Microsoft Excel to analyze spreadsheet data and data added from ArcGIS Online
  • Share an Excel map in a PowerPoint presentation
  • Determine the type of GIS resource needed to support a given use case
  • Efficiently publish services to ArcGIS Online
